Western Union Review 2026: Is It Still Worth It?
Full review of Western Union in 2026. Fees, rates, speed, security — is Western Union still relevant compared to Wise and Remitly?
ملخص
Our complete Western Union review for 2026. Fees, exchange rates, agent network, security. Verdict: still essential for cash, but too expensive for bank transfers.
Western Union is an institution in the money transfer world. Founded in 1851, it operates in 200+ countries with hundreds of thousands of agent locations. But in 2026, facing competition from Wise, Remitly and Revolut, is it still relevant? Here is our full review.
What is Western Union?
Western Union is the oldest and largest money transfer service. Its strength: enabling cash pickup at physical locations worldwide, even in the most remote areas.
Pros
**Unmatched network** — 500,000+ locations in 200+ countries. Available in rural Africa, Asia and Latin America.
**Instant cash pickup** — Money available in minutes. Recipient only needs ID and a tracking number (MTCN).
**No bank account needed** — Send cash directly at a WU agent location.
Cons
**High fees** — Among the most expensive providers. 4-8€ for a 100€ transfer to Africa, plus 2.5-4% exchange margin.
**Poor exchange rate** — 2.5-4% margin is among the highest in the market.
**Limited mobile money** — Starting to support Orange Money and M-Pesa, but still limited.
Verdict: 3.5/5
Western Union remains essential for cash pickups in areas without banking infrastructure. Nobody beats WU for instant cash. But for bank transfers and mobile money, Wise, Remitly or WorldRemit are far cheaper.
